Ashwaaaaaaa-gandha
Aug 06, 2023Excuse me, what? That’s what I typically hear when I suggest the herb ashwagandha to folks. It’s a staple for me and something I always have on hand. Now, what is it and what do I use it for?
Ashwagandha, or Indian ginseng, is an ancient medicinal herb classified as an adaptogen. AN adaptogen helps the body to adapt to stress and exert a normalizing effect. It is commonly used in Ayurveda, the alternative medicine practice in Indian principle of natural healing. According to Healthline, “ashwagandha has been used for over 3000 years to relieve stress, increase energy levels, and improve concentration.” Ashwagandha is Sanskrit for smell of the horse | ashva : horse gandha: smell| which refers to its unique smell and ability to increase strength.
What is ashwagandha good for:
- Reducing blood sugar levels
- Reducing cortisol levels
- Reducing stress + anxiety
- Reducing symptoms of depression
- Reducing inflammation
This is just the tip of iceberg on the benefits of ashwagandha. So, why specifically did I start taking it and why am I taking it now? Well, I was facing hormonal imbalances about 7 years ago and began taking it. Currently, I take it to counteract the effects of stress that may alter my sleep quality. When taken in the morning it may provide energy, but at bed it may help with sleep…there’s that adaptogenic quality at work.
I always encourages you to speak with your health practitioner before beginning a new supplement. I understand new information can be exciting but please take the correct precautions with your well care.
